Causes of Bad Breath
Bacteria: Bacteria feed on the particles of food left in your mouth after eating. Bacteria leave bad-smelling waste behind that causes halitosis, so it is important to brush and floss regularly to combat bacteria.
Dry mouth: Saliva washes bacteria and leftover food particles out of the mouth, which is why it is important to keep properly hydrated and prevent dry mouth. If dry mouth persists even if you hydrate regularly, talk to your doctor.
Gum Disease: If you have persistent bad breath or a constant bad taste in your mouth, that is a sign of advanced gum disease. When plaque builds up on the teeth and gums, this can cause your gums to become irritated, infected and inflamed.
Health conditions: Several health conditions like gastric reflux, diabetes, liver or kidney disease can all have the side effect of halitosis. See your healthcare provider as soon as possible if you suspect that you may have any of these health conditions.
The best way to prevent bad breath is to brush and floss daily. Good oral hygiene will help you eliminate the bacteria in your mouth that can cause bad breath. It is also important to brush your tongue while you’re brushing your teeth. A white or brown coating at the back of your tongue is a sign that you need to brush or use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue. The tongue is where most of the bacterial waste can build up. Mouthwashes only kill some of the bacteria or temporarily mask bad breath. This is only a temporary solution, and brushing and flossing offer a deeper clean.
